>> -- a cheerleader's condition. >> oh! >> and people are asking now, is this sport just too dangerous? >> lots of injuries. but first, let's get right to the cia sex scandal and the breaking news overnight about the veteran fbi agent who took the first investigative steps that could lead to the downfall of cia director david petraeus. brian ross has been following this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. the identification of the agent overnight was another piece of the petraeus case puzzle falling into place. it was last may when tampa socialite jill kelley began to get a series of e-mails that made her think someone was stalking her and her friend, cia director david petraeus. so kelley went to an fbi agent she knew personally. 47-year-old fred humphries, whose lawyer tells abc news, humphries was the agent who helped launch the investigation and later went to congress when he thought there was a coverup. >> if we hadn't had an individual who apparently believed in right and wrong with no gray, we may never have gotten to where we are in this case today. >> reporter: the fbi did not

tell the white house about petraeus' affair with his biographer, paula broadwell, until the day after the election, even though agents knew about it a month earlier. fbi director robert mueller went to capitol hill wednesday, to defend the bureau's handling of the case. around the same time, the president was saying he has full confidence in the fbi but is waiting for a full explanation. >> i am withholding judgment. >> reporter: even as fbi agents continued to investigate the classified documents found in the computer of petraeus' mistress, the president said he knew of no security lapse. >> i have no evidence at this point, from what i have seen. >> reporter: but the department of defense has revoked the security clearance held by paula broadwell. as for the agent, fred humphries, his home outside tampa was dark last night, other than this car racing out of the

driveway shortly after abc news arrived. >> sir, abc news? >> reporter: adding another bit of spice to the soap opera in tampa, reports that humphries had sent a picture of himself shirt less to jill kelley. his lawyer said that was true, but it was a joke between friends. he was standing on a shooting range with three shooting range dummies that showed only their heads and naked torsos, and he was pretending to be a fourth dummy, his lawyer says. and that he had no romantic connection with jill kelley, george. let's get from abc's martha raddatz. martha, the fbi was circling petraeus, while he's dealing with the fallout from the killings at the consulate in benghazi. and we heard that petraeus was clashing with others in the agency. and how and when he's going to be testifying to congress about that. >> reporter: i think petraeus is eager to defend the cia during the benghazi attack. and he had argued to get a timeline out about what happened and was clashing with some people. he still has a security clearance and knows that story better than anyone. what he will not be talking

about is the sex scandal that forced him to resign. but last night, admiral william mccraven, the man who planned and carried out the raid on bin laden, called petraeus an american hero for his service to the country, while saying he did not condone what happened. petraeus will not be talking about the sex scandal before the committee tomorrow. >> no, he will not. meanwhile, martha, the u.n. ambassador, susan rice, caught up in all this. several republican senators said they would filibuster any attempt by the president to make her secretary of state. and yesterday, at his press conference, the president very forceful defending ambassador rice. take a look at this. >> she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states in our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me.

>> reporter: a very strong defense. of course, it was the intelligence community that briefed susan rice before she went out on all the sunday shows saying this might have started because of protests, george. >> she was working off cia talking points. martha, thank you very much. that question to president obama about ambassador rice came from jonathan karl, who joined in on the press conference. and joins us now with more. questions on all of the big issues. but much of the focus on that looming fiscal cliff january 1st. >> reporter: that's right, george. the president will meet with congressional leaders tomorrow. he used that press conference to lay out very bright lines on where he stands on taxes and the fiscal cliff. holding his first news conference since winning re-election, the president took a hard line on his bottom line. there will be no budget deal without raising taxes on the wealthy. >> when it comes to the top 2%, what i'm not going to do is to

extend further a tax cut for folks who don't need it, which would cost close to $1 trillion. >> reporter: in his previous efforts to strike a so-called grand bargain with speaker of the house john boehner, the president proposed $800 billion in new tax revenues. but now, he is seeking twice that. $1.6 trillion in new taxes over the next ten years. that's a bitter pill for republicans to swallow. speaker boehner has called raising tax rates on anybody unacceptable. but he hasn't ruled out limiting deductions and closing loopholes. and that could be the outline of a possible deal. >> if you looked closely at what the president had to say, looked closely at what i have had to say, there are no barriers here to sitting down and beginning to work through this process. >> reporter: but if they don't come to a resolution, beginning january 1st, the economy could be thrown back into recession. and households making $70,000 a

year could see their taxes increase over $4,000. the president said he is open to new ideas. and if republicans have a way to raise taxes on the wealthy without raising rates, he wouldn't slam the door on them. george? >> the dancing begins. jon, thanks very much. let's get to josh and the mounting violence in the middle east. >> as we all slept, we're going to begin there. serious escalation overnight. israel and the palestinians moving closer to all-out war. dozens of rockets, as you see here, bombarding southern israel this morning, after israeli aircraft, tanks, and navy gun boats pounded the gaza strip. at least three israelis were killed in the violence. wednesday, israel killed the military commander of the palestinian militant group, hamas. he was in the car you see there exploding. in response, hamas warned that israel has, and i quote, opened the gates of hell, end quote. meanwhile, new trouble in the middle east is already affecting the stock market. let's get right to week end "gma" anchor bianna golodryga

with the latest here. good morning, bianna. >> reporter: good morning. we're seeing the ripple effects. overseas markets took a hit today. on wall street, the dow begins the day at its lowest level since june after losing 185 points on wednesday. the violence in the middle east is driving up oil prices. and today, we learn europe is officially in a recession. of course, the real concern is the fiscal cliff jon karl was talking about. the spending cuts and tax increases that could take effect at the end of the year. just the threat of going over the fiscal cliff may already stall a fragile economy. why? well, because consumers, worried about new taxes, may cut back on holiday shopping. and businesses worried about the future may delay hiring new workers or investing in new equipment. that's all a real concern, josh. it won't be going away anytime soon. >> and as news warrants, we'll have it for you. bianna, thank you for that. meanwhile, new reaction to mitt romney's explanation for why he lost the presidential election. he told donors that president obama was re-elected because of the, and i quote, financial gifts, end quote, that he gave

to black, latino, and young voters. meaning obama care, the d.r.e.a.m. act, contraception for women, and breaks on college loans. a top republican was among the first to fire back. louisiana governor bobby jindal, a former romney surrogate, called the comments absolutely wrong. and oil giant bp is expected to plead guilty today for its role in the massive 2010 gulf oil spill. as part of a reported deal with the justice department, bp would admit to criminal misconduct and pay what could be the largest penalty in u.s. history, in the billions of dollars. in exchange, the company would be exempt from prosecution. some workers could face manslaughter charges for things that happened during the spill. and the end of twinkies could be just hours away. now, everybody, hugs after the show. maker of the snack cakes, as well as wonder bread, has given its striking workers an ultimatum. return to work by 5:00 p.m. today or it will start liquidating the company in bankruptcy court. some 18,000 jobs and the happiness of millions is at stake. finally, a boys' football

team in oklahoma just turned the field into a field of dreams for their coach's son. take a look at this. 9-year-old jason smith jr., football fanatic. but he's in a wheelchair because of muscular dystrophy. so, a referee came up with an idea. the other team said okay. put a helmet on jason and push him down the field. >> that's great. >> into the end zone. so that he could score his very first touchdown. thankfully dad, as you can see, rolling somewhat excitedly on it the entire time with his cell phone. congratulations to you, jason. touchdown. >> good for him. that's fantastic. >> way to go, jason. great story. >> thank you so much. now, to a big health warning about the popular energy drink 5-hour energy. federal officials say it may have been a factor in at least 13 deaths over the past four years. abc's jim avila has the story. >> reporter: it's a small bottle, just two ounces. but packs a powerful caffeine punch, equal to two cups of

coffee. >> having one of those days? tired? groggy? >> reporter: 5-hour energy led the way in this new and growing segment of energy drinks. a stiff shot of caffeine and vitamins to jolt you awake. now, the federal government and the new york attorney general's office are investigating claims that it could do more than that. the fda has received reports of 13 deaths and 33 hospitalizations over the past four years, claiming 5-hour energy was involved. >> now, someone wants to drink multiple cans, which is when we're really seeing a lot of the side effects with this, you're getting up to astronomical amounts. 30, 40 cups of coffee. >> reporter: it's the second time in a month the fda has confirmed it's investigating claims that energy drinks are causing fatal reactions. in october, monster energy, another popular drink that contains even more caffeine, was linked to five deaths. the manufacturers point out, these are just claims. and there's no proven link between the drinks and the deaths.

in a statement overnight, 5-hour energy said, the product is intended for busy adults. the company says its compact product contains as much caffeine as a cup of the leading premium coffee. during an interview in september, the creator of 5-hour energy told abc news "nightline," when used as directed, the caffeine in his product does no harm. >> it's overblown when it's in small quantities. it's like this. water is good. but if you have too much, you drown. >> reporter: the fda warning this morning, while there's no proven link between energy drinks and these reported deaths, you should check with your doctor before drinking them. amy? >> all right. certainly good advice. jim, thanks so much. george? >> thanks, amy. we're going to turn, now, to the brazen embezzlement of a small-town bookkeeper from illinois. living a high life on the millions she stole from years of service. she's been caught and john schriffen has the story. >> why did you steal that money for so long? >> reporter: people in dixon, illinois, knew rita crundwell as the woman with the prize-winning

show horses. they never suspected that they had paid for them, as well as the expensive jewelry in these pictures, obtained exclusively by abc news. now, after massive fbi inguest investigation, the 59-year-old has been exposed as the anti-robin hood, stealing $53 million from the taxpayers so she could live the high life. >> nobody really had any idea she was doing what she did. >> reporter: crundwell took the money while serving as comptroller in the town of dixon. she spent the money on a $2 million custom r.v., a florida vacation home, and her prized possession, a world-class horse-breeding farm. now, all of the ill-gotten gains are up for auction by the u.s. marshals, including 400 horses. the question many are asking, how crundwell was able to get away with it for so long. >> there were no red flags that we were able to -- or did notice. >> reporter: the mayor of dixon says, she was the only person who controlled the city's

finances and funneled public money into her secret private accounts. authorities say crundwell was eventually taken down after going on vacation. her replacement called the bank to clear up some confusing paperwork. wednesday, she showed up in court to plead guilty, facing up to 20 years in prison. for "good morning america," john schriffen, abc news, chicago. >> so no red flags? how about several dozen arabian quarter horses. >> yeah, yeah. >> where did those come from? >> several dozen red flags, or beautiful flags. >> that's right. we're going to move on to tim tebow. superstar quarterback, being torn apart here in new york city by his own team behind his back. why is one of the most popular players in recent memory, who was once hailed as a savior, now being called terrible? take a look. >> tebow keeps it on the run. tebow at the 10! >> reporter: over the past three years, tim tebow has attracted a devout following, on the field. and off. the quarterback known across the country as much for his

you'll hear what they have to say, coming up. >> stirred up some controversy there. let's get to the software millionaire turned murder suspect. abc's matt gutman is in belize, where he spoke with john mcafee by phone yesterday. >> reporter: as we tried to find john mcafee late wednesday, the increasingly paranoid american millionaire, now on the run from police here in belize, found us. when we say we meet, when we say we're going to talk tomorrow, does that mean face-to-face? >> we'll talk on the phone first. talking face-to-face is going to be a very difficult thing, sir. because people know you are a reporter. you may not think you're being followed. but i assure you are. >> reporter: the bizarre phone conversation, mcafee told us he didn't murder his neighbor, greg faull, saturday night. >> i'm certainly innocent of the charges that are leveled against me in the press. >> reporter: you're innocent of the charges. police say he is a person of interest but have not called him a suspect or charged him. despite that, mcafee says, he's now in hiding, fearful of what

he calls a corrupt government. what you're saying and what i think you've been saying for a couple of days now, is you're sincerely concerned that if you wind up in their custody, they're going to assassinate you? >> absolutely. >> reporter: the minister taunting mcafee wednesday. >> he's extremely fair paranoid. and i would say bonkers. >> reporter: and police say they have good reason to question him. this document obtained exclusively by abc news, shows that after a month he was murdered, faull complained to authorities about his neighbor tycoon. faull told police mcafee's security was walking around with shotguns at night, menacing people. even complaining of taxis at all hours of the night, bearing girls to the house. then on friday, mcafee said he found four of his dogs poisoned. the next day, faull was dead.

>> he is a respecter of the laws. and came in and talk to the police. >> reporter: if these recent photos in "wired," mcafee says the media has portrayed him as gun-obsessed and insane. you used to not walk around armed, you're saying? >> i used to walk around armed. but only with a pistol in a hol store. >> reporter: and he bristols at suggests that he's insane. matt gutman, abc news, san pedro, belize. let's bring in nancy grace. dan abrams, "gma" legal correspondent. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> we just heard, mcafee hasn't been charged with a crime. he hasn't been named as a suspect. at this point, is it just a formality? >> of course, he's the main incident. you have a motive. you have the incident with the dogs. you have a history. and relationship that they had. and now, he's on the run.

the authorities are saying publicly, come on. we just want to talk to him. just come on in. we just want to have a little chat. of course, the reality is he is now the prime suspect. >> reporter: nancy, mcafee says he's innocent. he's blaming the police for the alleged poisoning of his dogs, not the victim. what evidence do police have against him? >> well, actually, they've got quite a bit of circumstantial evidence. a u.s. reporter was in mcafee's home recently. and sitting out on the dining room table during the interview is a lugar 9 millimeter weapon. the victim, gregory faull, the next door neighbor, lived about 300 yards away, was killed with a 9 millimeter weapon. and on the floor was a lugar ammo shell casing. whoever killed him also took the victim's iphone and his laptop. now, why would they do that? possibly to get rid of evidence of angry exchanges between the two. and before the neighbor is made

out to be a zany coot, other neighbors complained about this pack of dogs and the security guards, as well. an interesting fact, the thursday before the dogs were allegedly poisoned, you see mcafee with the mayor of san pedro, at a formal event, where he donates, handcuffs, tasers, batons, to the police. but suddenly, he says he is the victim of some vendetta. and interesting thing to note, in belize, which was formally under great britain rule, they no longer have a jury trial. they have a constitutional amendment taking away jury trials in murder cases. he'll be before a judge. >> mcafee has been characterized as paranoid, bonkers, delusional. how does that factor into this case? >> you heard him asked there in the taped piece. he's saying he's not, in effect, insane. but there is a lower standard for insanity in a defense in

belize and here in the united states. tougher to claim insanity here than there. with that said, we're not there yet. he hasn't even been arrested yet. and let's keep in mind. people are going to say, if he had been in this country, he would have been charged already. he would be named -- i don't think that's true. while nancy lays out some of the evidence they have against him, they still need to build a case against him. they need to get some comments from him. they need physical evidence. this is not an open-and-shut case. >> and he's commenting to the media. he has talked to "wired." he was talking to matt gutman. what is going to undo him? >> he's breaking the cardinal rule of criminal defense, don't talk. he talked to you guys. he talked to cnbc, "the wired," the a.p., he can't shut up. he says he's not crazy. but it's like taking out a billboard on madison avenue, i

didn't do it, when nobody says you did. he dyed his hair, his mustache. he's hiding in the sand with a cardboard box over his head. he's acting guilty. he may try to leave the island. >> there's nothing worse you can do when the authorities want to talk to you, not just to run away. but to then runaway and talk to everyone about running away. and talk to people, the authorities -- the authorities want to hurt me. the authorities want to kill me. >> and dye your hair, dan. >> the good news is, if the authorities had wanted to kill him, with all of this media attention, they're not going to do anything to him now. you're safe. you can come in. you can talk to them. they won't get a chance to do anything to you now. >> what i don't understand, dan, is why they can't find him. it's 68 miles by 180 and they can't find him? >> we'll keep you updated. this case has legs. time, now, for the weather and sam champion. sam? >> good morning, atlanta. wsb, by the way.

7:43. we continue, now, on the latest on the nba cheerleader who took a stunning plunge during a stunt. the incident is raising new questions about whether the sport of cheering is too extreme. we want to say the cheerleader is fine. but the video is a little tough to watch. abc's linsey davis with the story. >> reporter: it's a routine cheerleading stunt gone terribly wrong. >> you see her leg get caught on his shoulder. and nothing there. nothing to stop her. >> reporter: 30-year-old orlando magic stunt team cheerleader jamie woode lost her footing. and landing right on her head, breaking a rib and three vertebrae during an orlando magic game against the new york knicks tuesday night. woode is now in stable condition. but her fall sheds light on the extreme stunts that are now the status quo for cheerleading on the big stage.

zara saying it has no plans to make bigger clothes that would fit most americans because making the bigger sizes would cost big bucks to make. juju chang is here with that. juju, good morning. >> reporter: did you know obesity rates in the u.s. are 35%, compared to 10% in france and italy. could the global leader in fashion really be ignoring the u.s. market? i went shopping with two plus-sized bloggers to check it out. they're fashionable clothe at a friendly price, if you can fit into them. the chain zara, is the world's largest retailer. they beat out forever 21 or h&m, in the fashion market, which introduces new fashion-forward, low-cost clothing every two weeks. but one thing you won't find on their racks, plus sizes. according to a "new york times" article, that's no design flaw. adding larges sizes costs more. that may be why across the globe there's nearly 1,700 zara stores. but in the u.s., just 45.

tie-dye not the rage yet in the 16th century. after hearing the story, we wanted to talk to max. he dressed the part for us this morning. max galuppo, show thyself. look at you. that's amazing. tell us again. you're just walking through the museum. and who was it that actually saw the painting first? and what did you think? >> it was my girlfriend, who first saw it. i was at the other side of the room, looking at the weaponry and armor. she tapped me on the shoulder and just pointed it out to me. >> so, you're looking at the swords and the cool stuff. and she says, look. you look like the guy in the red tights. that makes perfect sense. and you actually, i at least believe, you have relatives from the area. are you going to try to find out if this is maybe a long lost galuppo? >> we're going to do our best. the only thing we could find on the painting itself is that it's from an area of italy called amelia, the north part, not far from florence.

everyone wants one. not always easy to get. what is there was a way to fake it? "lucky" magazine has a way to make any figure look flawless. and lori bergamotto is here to show us how. i want to start in general. how do you do it when you're working with a fashion shoot? what are your tricks? >> "lucky's" tricks are downplaying any problem areas. and it's about having fun and trying a lot of things on. luckily, we've done all of the work for you. i can give you the guidelines what you can downplay and what you can bring out. >> let's bring out an example. do we have a before shot? >> this is stacy. very petite. stacy's only 5'2." we're going to make her look longer and leaner. shall we see our after here? i know that you know the tricks of the trade.

for those of you who don't, it's all about creating a fluid line and making sure you're sticking within the same color family. we did stacy in a gray color, which is huge for fall. these pants are from banana republic. everything you're going to see today is under $100. and the key is the mid to high-rise. the gentle fit through the thigh. and a little flare at the heels. >> i also love, one of my tricks is going long on the pants. adds inches to your legs. that's a great look. this is one example of trickery. let's see our second example. thank you, stacy. do we have a before shot, please? >> this is amanda. for amanda, she has an hourglass figure. but she wants to downplay her hips and her thighs. that's a problem a lot of us have. let's bring her out. she looks so amazing. i love it because it's so fun. it's such a "lucky" outfit. the win from the '50s, the marilyn monroes and rita

of family and home, while their husband is out of the country. >> it's hard to separate the amy and the wife. that's what i am. an army wife. >> reporter: yolanda was born into the army life. the daughter of two career soldiers. her husband just completed his fourth deployment. >> how was your day yesterday? >> reporter: the couple has one son, cameron. he is a junior at west point. >> i could not imagine sending my only child to war. and you're 100% sure this is what you want to do? >> positive. >> reporter: there is no one more qualified than yolanda to bring together this sisterhood of army wives at ft. richardson, alaska. >> my husband just joined a year ago in january. >> oh, wow. >> reporter: it's a support group that never knows what the new day will bring. >> as an army wife, i can say with probably 98% certainty, your husband will be different. but it's nothing to fear. it's just something to prepare for. on the flipside, you won't be

deployment. he is a west point cadet. you don't get to see much, i'm guessing. >> that's true, sir. we do not. our son is a junior at west point. so, we are in alaska. we don't have an opportunity to see him very much. he's following in his dad's footsteps. >> we have a bit of a surprise for you. colonel, i know you haven't seen your son. he is here with us. cameron, come on out. it's been a while. >> there's so many difficult things that people who serve in the military have to go through. but the family relationships are another one. and it builds a very strong bond. you and your story have been explaining to families what to expect. this is the kind of thing he has to get used to, being away from the family and coming back. but it doesn't change the bonds, correct? >> no, it does not. it strengthens the bonds. when your husband or your son is away, and you cannot see them every day, my husband left for work one day. and he came home ten months later. it teaches you to cherish those moments that you do have and to focus on what is important. and not trivialize. >> i'm guessing your dad is your inspiration. >> yes, ma'am. >> does he have an important life lesson that you decided to follow in his footsteps? >> he's just a great leader to me. and i want to be just like him. follow the same career path and everything. >> you're well on your way. >> it's amazing to see you both. don't miss this show, by the way.
